Welcome to Ms. Garstang's website!

This website is a resource for students, parents, teachers and myself.

I am the Learning Assistance and Resource Teacher at École Cobble Hill in SD79. Previously, I worked in SD72 and SD71. In SD72 I was at École des Deux Mondes as the Learning Support Teacher, classroom teacher at Southgate teaching grades 6/7 Art and grade 8 English, and in SD71 I worked part time in a grade 2/3 classroom and a grade 6 classroom as well as a TTOC.

My background is Outdoor Education/Experiential Education /Adventure-based learning and Fine Art. I started off as a participant in two 21-day Outward Bound courses in Ontario and BC. From there I was hooked and got a summer camp job at YMCA Camp PineCrest. Travelling to Norman Wells in the NWT, I worked as the Youth & Elder Centre and Summer Camp coordinator. After a two year diploma in Outdoor Recreation Management at Capilano College in North Van, I headed off to Hornby Island where I completed my practicum at Tribune Bay Outdoor Education Centre. From there I ventured to Strathcona Park Lodge, Terracentric Coastal Adventures, and Rediscovery where I enjoyed many years of working with wise and adventurous spirits. If you'd like, please ask me about my many years working in remote and interesting places as I pursued this passion!

I value inclusive UDL education that integrates inquiry, place-based learning, and First Nations principles of learning into my teaching. I am learning about ADST, design and computational thinking. Aside from the two year Diploma in Outdoor Recreation Management, I hold two Bachelor degrees; Bachelor of Fine Art from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and Bachelor of Education from VIU. I have completed the Inclusive Education Graduate Diploma at VIU and the Teaching French Immersion Specialization Certificate at UVic. I am now working towards a Masters in Special Education. I take every Professional Development opportunity possible and value lifelong learning.
